Didja Notice?

 

On page 1, panel 4, Zoe's bunkmate on the prison moon is apparently reading a copy of Stephen King's The Long Walk, a dystopian science-fiction novel originally published in 1979 under King's pseudonym of Richard Bachman.

 

Serenity lets the Operative off on a previously unmentioned world called Theophrastus.

 

The shirt Simon is wearing on page 18 looks a bit like the Starfleet uniforms worn by cast members on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

 

On page 19, panel 1, the mobile hanging above Emma's bed has hanging from it several miniature items, a Firefly-class ship, the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars, the ancient Slayer weapon called the Scythe from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and something that looks like it might be the submarine called Seaview from the 1960's movie and TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Another item appears to be a picture of a human face; possibly Emma's father, Wash.

 

At the end of this issue, the female Operative (possibly the one referred to by the Operative as Kalista) recovers the battered body of Jubal Early and plans to heal him and get him to find Serenity for her. It is also revealed that she is one of the Academy's augmented children.

 

Unanswered Questions

 

Did Zoe kill the Operative? It seems likely, but we don't actually see it happen. Does Mal know what she did? It seems like he must have seen her follow the Operative out into the forest.

 

What will Mal do next? Are he and the crew going to join the New Resistance?

 

Is Jayne staying with the crew at this point?
