Shepherd Book acts as midwife to an artificial intelligence.

Notes from the Firefly/Serenity Chronology

Wash is still alive in this story and Shepherd Book is still with the crew, suggesting it takes place fairly early in the chronology. I am placing it after "Blue Sun Rising" Part 7.

Didja Know?

This is a 20-page story from Firefly: 20th Anniversary Special, the first of two stories. It is untitled, so PopApostle has given it the title of "Instrument of Peace", from the first line of the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi spoken by Shepherd Book near the end of the story. The second story in the special, also untitled, but called "Eternal Life" on PopApostle, is a follow-up to this one, set about 20 years later.

Didja Notice?

For some reason, Kaylee appears to be wearing a pink bikini while installing new thrusters on Serenity in her single appearance in panel 4 of page 2 in this story.

In panel 3 of page 4 of the story, the crashed Alliance ship appears to have been the I.A.V. Phantasm.

In this story, we see some Alliance land vehicles not previously seen.

River calls Shepherd Book "old man" throughout the story.

On page 7 of the story, Zoe accuses Book of acting like Revelations is about to happen. "Revelations" refers to the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, The Book of Revelation, containing apocalyptic visions and prophecies about the end times and the final judgment of humanity.

Throughout this story, Jayne is paranoid that he is being left behind on the planet because of something he did. He mentions to Mal, "If this is about the money, I've learned my lesson!" Mal doesn't know what he's talking about, but the implication seems to be that Jayne stole some money from the ship and has a guilty conscience about it.

On page 18 of the story, Book begins reciting the opening lines of the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi. The full prayer is:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
